In Conversation with Marta Fonseca & Gonçalo Alves of Areias do Seixo Hotel
Tucked away behind a forest of pine trees with a view on the beach, Areias do Seixo is a five-star hotel near Santa Cruz (Portugal) that fuses luxury and eco-sustainability with incredible sophistication. Centered around comfort, informality and familiarity, the eco-resort brings together quality accommodations and optimal design, like passive geothermal climate control, with such humble amenities as an organic vegetable garden. Guests can be entertained by dramatic views over the Atlantic from their rooms, or opt to get together for a drink in the evening. The hotel offers its guests the possibility to cure themselves from the stress of everyday urban life and to embrace nature to the fullest.
We asked Marta and Gonçalo Alves, the hotel’s owners, to share what makes their locality special to them. As suspected, they are entirely focused on sharing a human experience with their guests, which we invite you to discover through their interview.

What does it mean to be a local in Torre Vedras?
Being a local in Torres Vedras means being able to enjoy the best that the cross between urban and rural life has to offer: the people, the culture, the services; the nature, the wine, the beach. It means experiencing Carnival intensely, and spending the rest of the year dreaming about the next one, taking advantage of the summer to spend it in Santa Cruz. Being a local in Torres Vedras means having time to experience the city and the beach, to breathe deeply on the cliffs and to celebrate the sea.
How does Central Portugal influence your approach to hospitality?
At Areias de Seixo we like to welcome our guests with love and simplicity, just like we would with our families and friends in our home. We’ve created a magical home to receive visitors from all parts of the world, sharing authenticity, emotion and engaging with Nature in its purest state. We celebrate life with gratitude.
"Being a local in Torres Vedras means having time to experience the city and the beach, to breathe deeply on the cliffs and to celebrate the sea."
What makes the place where you live special to you?
Time. The time that we have to look at the sea, walk on the cliffs, be with people and celebrate everything nature gave us. And the people. For their simplicity and their willingness to share what belongs to all of us.
If friends from abroad are visiting, where would you suggest they go for a morning coffee?
Noah Surf House on the beach (Avenida do Atlantico, Praia da Fisica, Santa Cruz).
What about a local meal?
Bacalhau com batatas a murro – salted cod with smashed potatoes in the restaurant Pão Saloio (Rua da Guerra Peninsular 27, Vimeiro)
An evening out for a drink?
Manel Bar in Torres Vedras, a classic joint for a cocktail and nice music.
Is there one thing to eat that you think best captures the soul of your city?
The gastronomic delicacy of Torres Vedras: our traditional pastel de feijão, a sweet bean pastry.
Is there a local tip you could share?
Fill your lungs with nature on a wonderful bike ride! Leave Areias do Seixo, head to the marvellous beach of Santa Rita and wrap yourself in the magic of a path surrounding the banks of a river. Here, let yourself be lulled by the music of the enchanted trees and mountains until you find the Vimeiro thermal baths (Fonte dos Frades), a spa that dates back to the 19th century.
